The Perfect Dental Monitoring Scan

The Perfect Dental Monitoring Scan

Our guide to getting the best results from your scan

Dental Monitoring is an innovation that we are using for our Invisalign patients and it could not have come to Australia at a better time. With your phone and the portable tools we provide, our Invisalign patients can receive personalised treatment advice and monitoring without needing as many in-office visits to our studio. It is also very convenient should you be in isolation or lockdown during Covid

  • Know when to change your Invisalign trays
  • Have a conversation with your orthodontist
  • Easy to use and portable
  • Monitor your Invisalign treatment progress from anywhere

Of course, we still need to see your smiling faces at Clear Orthodontic Studio, but not as often.

How Dental Monitoring works

Our website has a detailed guide to how Dental Monitoring technology works with Invisalign treatment. You can read all about it here, but in short:

  • Our Clear Orthodontic Studio team sets you up with the Dental Monitoring app, ScanBox and cheek retractors.
  • You will take and upload regular selfies of your teeth through the app
  • Our team monitors your progress

The technology is easy to use for anyone familiar with smartphones, but you can always schedule an appointment or give us a call if you need a refresher.

1. Your smartphone with the Dental Monitoring app
Dental Monitoring is an application you download onto your existing smartphone. The app is available on the Google Play store (for Android) and the Apple store (for iOS, including iPod Touch and iPad).

2. ScanBox
The next piece of hardware you need is the Dental Monitoring ScanBox. Featuring a stable smartphone holder and comfortable cushioning, ScanBox aligns your phone’s camera for accurate scanning.
Scanning your smile takes less than two minutes and there are audio instructions to guide you. Once you have uploaded your images to Clear Orthodontic Studio through the Dental Monitoring app, we will analyze these using AI and communicate with you on your progress and when to change into your next Invisalign aligner.

3. Cheek retractor
The Dental Monitoring cheek retractor is designed to draw your lips away from your teeth for a clearer scan. It should feel comfortable and be the right size to show all your teeth.
When we provide the ScanBox and cheek retractor, we will guide you through using them safely and comfortably, so you get great scan results in a matter of minutes.

Make the most of this new technology

Dental Monitoring is an innovative accompanying tool for Invisalign treatment. Here at Clear Orthodontic Studio, we are seeing great responses to this technology because it can make treatment faster, more flexible and with less in-person visits.

Benefits of Clear Aligners

Benefits of Clear Aligners

Beyond the aesthetic appeal of using clear aligners instead of braces as a treatment option, there are a number of other benefits to using aligners.

Doesn’t Disrupt Your Lifestyle

Invisalign treatment is designed to transform your smile without interrupting your lifestyle. Keep eating the food you love, playing sports, and go about your day while the custom-made aligners do their work. Aligners are nearly invisible, so most people won’t notice you are wearing them. There are no brackets or wires to get in the way of brushing and flossing.

Can be removed when eating and drinking

Unlike braces which are on 24/7 for the entire treatment, clear aligners can be removed for a few hours each day. This allows patients to eat and drink freely, rather than getting food stuck in between the wires and brackets of traditional braces, making Invisalign a better option with regards  to dental hygiene.

Suitable for sports and other activities

In many sports, teeth are prone to injury. Even if you’re wearing a mouthguard, braces can become damaged or cause soft tissue damage in the mouth. Invisalign alleviates this risk of damage, as there are no wires or brackets to worry about. Regular mouthguards can be fitted over Invisalign trays to protect teeth, or you can simply take out the aligners and wear a  mouthguard during contact sports.

More hygienic than braces

Keeping on top of oral hygiene is much easier with Invisalign compared to braces. Invisalign aligners are taken out to brush, floss, eat and drink, meaning no trapped food or bacteria build ups. Aligners can be easily cleaned throughout the day.

Can treat most orthodontic issues

Invisalign is effective at treating mild to moderate orthodontic cases including overcrowded teeth, teeth with gaps, crossbite, overbite and underbite. Treatment is personalised, which is one of the reasons treatment times vary. Orthodontists have experience with successfully treating a wider range of cases using aligner technology and, treatment times are often reduced compared to braces.

Fewer clinic appointments

Invisalign typically requires fewer appointments with your orthodontic team. If your orthodontist uses remote dental monitoring it is likely to be even less.

The benefits of a treatment such as Invisalign are clear, as the overall disruption to your everyday life is minimal. Invisalign is an excellent way we at Clear Orthodontic Studio can provide you with the treatment you need, without interrupting your busy day-to-day life. Technology and Orthodontics

Technology and Orthodontics

How we Use technology advances in our orthodontic assessment and treatment

Advances in technology have significantly changed the way we practice orthodontics. With advances in 3D scanning, remote dental monitoring and clear aligner treatment the orthodontic journey is much quicker,  cleaner and easier.

3D oral scanners

3D oral scanners easily create digital scans of your teeth without radiation. These highly accurate images allow your orthodontist to plan and implement treatment with precision. Rather than the orthodontist estimating teeth movement and progression, we are now able to use digital technologies to create a personalised treatment prescription, meaning you are able to achieve more predictable results in less time. When you book in for your complimentary assessment at Clear Orthodontic Studio we take a 3D scan of your teeth and provide you with a 3D simulation of what your teeth could look like after aligner treatment.

Remote Dental Monitoring

Remote dental monitoring allows your orthodontic team to track your teeth’s movement without the need for as many appointments. It uses an app compatible with your smartphone, to upload photos to your orthodontic team. The weekly scans are very simple and take less than a minute. We then match the scans against your treatment plan to ensure your progress is tracking as it should. We communicate with our patients, reminding them to change aligners, increase wear time, replace an attachment and monitor their brushing and cleaning.  If anything is observed in the scans that is unexpected, we will make an appointment as required for your personal journey.

Dental monitoring helps patients to:

  • Improve self confidence
  • Receive treatment updates from anywhere, ensuring Invisalign treatment doesn’t get in the way of school, travel or work
  • Reduce treatment time with more regular ‘check-ups’ via the weekly scans
  • Ensure treatment is on track with their prescribed 3D digital treatment plan
  • Keep in touch with their orthodontist about any issues or concerns with the treatment (messages can be sent directly to their orthodontic team via the app)
  • Take more ownership for their Invisalign treatment

The benefits of technological advances in our practice of orthodontic work speak for itself. Here at Clear Orthodontics, we are dedicated to using these technologies to provide you with a simpler, and less invasive option for your orthodontic treatment, that is more compatible with your busy life. To discuss your orthodontic journey, you can book a consultation with one of our friendly staff members. You can also learn more about the importance of orthodontics and alignment by downloading our free eBook.

Why Should I See An Orthodontist?

Why Should I See An Orthodontist?

If you’re not familiar with the work orthodontists do, it can be difficult to determine why you should see an orthodontist, or whether orthodontic treatment is right for you. But the fact of the matter is, there is no right or wrong answer to the question ‘why should I see an orthodontist’. The answer is as unique to each person as their smile is, and reasons for seeking treatment are many and varied.

Why seek orthodontic treatment?

There are many reasons people seek orthodontic treatment, this includes:  wanting to improve their self-confidence; difficulty with brushing and flossing; an increased risk of decay; and at risk of injury to teeth that stick out or have trouble chewing or speaking. The goal of orthodontic treatment is not only limited to alignment of teeth and correction of bites. Teeth provide structure and support for the lips and cheeks and help define your face. When an orthodontist designs your smile all of these factors are considered, ensuring that you have a beautiful smile and are able to age confidently.

Research has found that facial attractiveness affects interpersonal success, particularly in school and employment settings, with dental features playing a large part in this area. In particular the appearance of the teeth and the smile. Orthodontic treatment has been found to significantly improve individuals’ body-image and confidence, as well as making teeth easier to clean. So, whether investing in your own smile, or that of your child it is certainly worth doing well.

Benefits of orthodontic treatment

  • Improve self confidence
  • Correct bad bites that can damage teeth and gums
  • Correct protruding or misaligned teeth
  • Correct gaps in your smile and teeth
  • Make cleaning teeth much easier, therefore protecting your teeth from decay and the issues that come with that
  • Help define your face
  • Improve speech, breath and/or chewing difficulties
  • Improved misaligned jaws, which then impacts your facial profile
  • An orthodontist can also help in the diagnosis and management of obstructive sleep apnoea and can help manage persistent thumb and finger sucking habits in children

Here at Clear Orthodontic Studio  we are committed to providing each and every one of our patients  with the highest standard of care, no matter your reasoning for seeking orthodontic treatment. What Is Orthodontics?

What Is Orthodontics?

Introduction to Orthodontics

Your smile is one of your most important features and having confidence in your smile can have a significant positive impact on your life. There are multiple benefits of orthodontic treatment including psychological and physical improvements.

Crooked and crowded teeth can be a cosmetic issue; however, they are also harder to clean, which can lead to tooth decay and gum disease.  If your teeth don’t align properly when you bite you may face challenges with speaking, chewing and swallowing.

Having orthodontic treatment is an investment and decisions around the type of treatment you have and who provides it for you, should be made with the correct information. We hope this blog will equip you with the information you need. If you have any other questions the team at Clear Orthodontic Studio are ready to answer them for you.

What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a dental speciality focussing on correcting teeth and jaw irregularities and improving their function. This can include straightening teeth and correcting misaligned bites through the use of orthodontic appliances, such as braces and clear aligners (Australian Society of Orthodontics).

Who to see for Orthodontic treatment?

An orthodontist is a specialist who has completed a degree in dentistry and then been accepted to study for a further 3 years at university to specialise in orthodontics. While both dentists and orthodontists work to improve your overall health, orthodontists specialise in one area. Similar to seeing your GP (general medical practitioner) or seeing a specialist such as a cardiologist for a heart condition.

While there are dentists who do orthodontic work, it is advisable that orthodontic treatment (including braces and clear aligners) should ideally be provided by a registered specialist orthodontist. Orthodontists have the skills and expertise to correctly diagnose orthodontic problems, assess and monitor your tooth movements, and safeguard the health of your teeth. Poor orthodontic treatment can have significant health implications such as tooth loss, gum recession and longer than expected treatment times. It is worth noting that you do not need a referral  to see an orthodontist.

When to see an orthodontist

There are a range of orthodontic treatment options available, depending on the severity of your orthodontic needs, personal goals and biological factors. The Australian Society of Orthodontists recommends having an orthodontic assessment between 7-10 years of age, even if there are still baby  teeth present.

Early intervention is much easier at this stage of development and treatment times are greatly reduced as the mouth and jaws are still growing. However, many adults can achieve beautiful and lasting results through orthodontic treatment, we recommend making an appointment to find out what treatment can do for you.

Back To School Tips For Wearing Clear Aligners at School

Back To School Tips For Wearing Clear Aligners at School

A common question we are asked is how will my child manage caring for their Invisalign aligners while at school?

My daughter is almost 12 years old and is in her 5th month of treatment with Clear Orthodontic Studio’s resident orthodontist, Dr Ash.  I thought I would share with you the tips we give our patients at Clear Orthodontic Studio as well as my daughter’s personal challenges and tips when it comes to her Invisalign braces and caring for them.

What to pack:

On the day you are given your clear aligners, Clear Orthodontic Studio provides you with a retainer case; antibacterial spray; small tube of toothpaste and an aligner removal key.

After our initial appointment I took my daughter to purchase a travel toothbrush and a small make up pouch (which has dogs on it – as she is mad about dogs) to hold everything she would need to take to school. She takes everything that was given to her by Clear Orthodontic Studio as well as her travel brush.

Maintaining good hygiene

At recess and lunch the aligners need to be removed before eating and placed in their case. Never put your aligners in a napkin or a lunchbox, as they can easily get lost or be thrown out (Your aligner should only ever be in one of two places; on your teeth or in their case). After eating, you can give your teeth a quick brush and/or floss, or if you are short of time, a simple rinse with water for your mouth and a spray on the aligners using the antibacterial spray (no rinsing required) and you are ready to pop them back in.

After my daughter accidentally left her case at home, we got her a second case that stays in her dog pouch and we have another at home. This means she will never be without a case.

Initially my daughter felt self-conscious taking her aligners out in front of her friends. I suggested she go to the bathroom a few minutes before recess and lunch, so she could remove them and place them in their case.

She only needed to do this for a short time before she became confident at removing and replacing her aligners discreetly.

After changing to a new aligner, you may experience tightness and find it hard to remove your aligners. You may also find your teeth feel a bit sore for a day or two.

A tip we tell our patients, is when you are due for an aligner change, do it at night so your teeth have a block of time without being taken out and you don’t feel the tightness while you are sleeping.

Pain relief medication is not usually needed, but can be given if required.

Will they wear their clear aligners for the required amount of time?

invisalign braces teens

It is recommended that clear aligners are worn for 20-22hrs a day to be effective. Some parents are concerned as to whether their child will comply with this recommendation. However, research shows that on average, teenagers wear their aligners for exactly the recommended amount and in fact are more compliant with their treatment compared to adults.

Invisalign treatment has been perfect for my daughter’s busy schedule and only took her a few days to get into a good routine that worked for her.

The team at Clear Orthodontic Studio are here to answer any questions or concerns you may have.

How To Care For Your Invisalign Aligners: The Do’s & Don’t’s

How To Care For Your Invisalign Aligners: The Do’s & Don’t’s

Invisalign aligners are designed to fit your life while transforming your beautiful smile.  Keep eating the foods you love, playing sports and go about your day, while your nearly invisible aligners do their work, with no interruption to your lifestyle.

Invisalign clear aligners are easy to care for – although they can’t clean themselves or run away from curious dogs who love to chew…..yet.

Until that happens, there are a few things you need to make sure you are doing, to best care for your Invisalign aligners.

invisalign treatment for teens

  • Wear your aligners for 20-22 hours a day

Only remove your aligners to eat, brush, to drink anything other than water and to clean them. If you play contact sports for extended periods of time, please let us know so that we can offer you personalised advice.

  • Clean your aligners morning and night

Whenever you brush your teeth, use a gentle toothbrush and toothpaste to thoroughly clean your aligners.

If you are out and about during the day or it is too difficult at school, we do not expect you to carry your brush with you.  All you need to do is rinse your mouth with water and use the provided sanitising spray on your aligners.  This will kill up to 99.9% of bacteria and leave you with a fresh spearmint taste (No need to rinse prior to putting your aligners back in).

  • Use the right products for a deeper clean

Although you will be changing your aligners every 5-7 days, you may feel you want to give your aligners a deeper clean.

You can do this, by either soaking your aligners in white vinegar for 15 minutes or with a denture cleaning tablet adding a couple of drops of hydrogen peroxide.

  • Keep away from dogs

When your aligners are not in your mouth, keep them in your case and in an out-of-reach place.  Your fury friend will love your aligners as a chew toy.

  • Use hot water or a dishwasher

Rinse your aligners in lukewarm water only.  High temperatures can warp the aligners and damage them.

  • Soak in mouthwash

Some mouthwashes can be harsh on Invisalign aligners.  Do not be tempted to soak your aligners in a glass of mouthwash, as this can cause discolouration.

  • Use coloured soaps

Soaps with no colour can be used to clean your Invisalign aligners.  However coloured soap should be avoided, in case your aligners absorb the colour, leaving you with a tinted smile.

  • Wrap them in a tissue or serviette

When your aligners are not in your mouth, they need to be in their case.  If they are wrapped in a tissue or serviette, they are too easy to throw out.  If you have lost your aligner case, please ask us for a replacement one.

  • Change your routine when travelling

Travelling doesn’t mean you can get slack with your cleaning and care routine.

Our Retainer Advice

Our Retainer Advice

Retainer Wear

Your journey to a beautiful smile does not end when your Invisalign aligners come out for the last time. You have put a lot of effort into reaching this celebratory milestone. To ensure your beautiful new smile lasts a life time – you will need to wear retainers.

Retainers hold your teeth in their new positions while bone tissue rebuilds around them. Your teeth naturally want to shift through out life, whether you have had orthodontic treatment or not. Nothing can prevent 100% of tooth movement, but when retainers are worn as prescribed, they are the best tool available to minimize movement.

Retainers can only do their job, when they are in your mouth!

Some Important Tips!

When your retainer is not in your mouth, put it in its case!

• Always carry a retainer case with you
• Do not put your retainer in your pocket or bag, as you may damage it.
• Avoid wrapping your retainer in a tissue or serviette – it is too easy to throw away.
• Keep your retainer out of reach of dogs. Dogs love to chew retainers.
• Avoid heat. Your retainer can become deformed if it is left in the car, put in hot water or the dishwasher.
Avoid drinking any liquids (except water) when your retainers are in place. Liquids can seep into the retainer and is held against the teeth until the retainer is removed. Liquids other than water contain natural or artificial sugars and/or acids, which can cause tooth decay.

How To Keep Your Retainers Clean

• Clean your retainers with a gentle toothpaste or kitchen detergent before you put them in and after they are removed. If you find this too difficult during the day, you can rinse your mouth with water and spray a sanitizing spray called Smilesaver (which also has a pleasant spearmint flavor) onto your retainers.
• To remove stains, you can soak your retainers in white vinegar for 15 minutes or with a denture cleaning tablet with a couple of drops of hydrogen peroxide once a week.

If you have a problem with your retainer, please contact our team at Clear Orthodontic Studio.

It’s Now Over To You!

Keep your smile healthy and beautiful with your home hygiene routine and seeing your dentist regularly for your check up and cleans.
To preserve the great results of your aligner treatment, wear your retainers as instructed by your Orthodontist, Dr Ash. Happy smiling!
*Invisalign aligners are a registered medical device, you should always read and follow the label and the instructions of your treating orthodontist.
